In a city that did not see the sun for many many weeks at a time, it became very good at making warm places. If you ever visited, (most people don’t), you'd find that the coffee shops, gas stations, and the winter building for the farmer's market seemed familiar. That is, they'd treat you as they'd treat the natives. It might be that when winter lasts so long, as it does in Orchestra, New York, you learn quickly that the weather and world doesn't care about you or your sins. No ill or good will to go around, only your own.
The farmer's market runs all year round here. Maybe some of the vendors have homegrown produce, but heaven knows where the people selling berries in January are getting their stuff. Either way, the café at the far right end of the building really does have the best coffee, and the best middle aged ladies who don't care about you particularly but also don't have anything against you.
